Fetal Morphology

Fetal morphology is one of the most important examinations during pregnancy. It provides a comprehensive assessment of the baby’s development, checks whether the organs are forming correctly, and can detect potential anomalies even before birth. At “Heart Diagnostic Center,” we perform precise morphological scans with attention to every detail, using modern equipment and a compassionate approach.

Our goal is to provide clarity, reassurance, and peace of mind to expectant parents during one of the most exciting yet sensitive periods of their lives.

What is fetal morphology?

Fetal morphology is a specialized ultrasound examination that involves a detailed review of the fetus’s organs and structures. Various anatomical parameters are measured, growth is monitored, and the development of the brain, heart, spine, abdominal organs, limbs, and facial structures is assessed.

The examination is performed at specific stages of pregnancy and is an essential part of monitoring the baby’s normal development.

When is fetal morphology performed?

Three main fetal morphology scans are recommended:

  • First trimester morphology – between the 11th and 13th gestational week (combined with screening for chromosomal anomalies – biochemical screening and nuchal translucency)
  • Second trimester morphology – between the 18th and 22nd week (the most detailed examination of the baby’s organs and structure)
  • Third trimester morphology – around the 28th–32nd week (assessing growth, amniotic fluid volume, and the placenta)

In certain cases, an additional morphology scan may be performed based on medical indications.

What does fetal morphology evaluate?

During the examination, a detailed assessment is made of:

  • The brain, skull, and facial structures (including lips, nasal bone)
  • The heart and great vessels (often combined with fetal echocardiography)
  • The stomach, liver, kidneys, and bladder
  • The spine
  • The abdominal wall and umbilical cord
  • The limbs – length, shape, symmetry
  • The placenta and its blood flow (Doppler study)
  • The amount of amniotic fluid
  • Overall biometric parameters – weight, length, etc.

The scan can reveal markers for genetic anomalies, congenital malformations, or growth deviations.

What to expect during the examination?

Fetal morphology is performed using an abdominal ultrasound. The procedure is completely painless, poses no risk to the baby, and lasts between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the stage of pregnancy and the baby’s position.

During the examination:

  • The specialist measures and analyzes the baby’s structures
  • Uses 2D, 3D, and Doppler functions when needed
  • Explains clearly what is being seen
  • Recommends additional tests or follow-up if necessary

At the end of the scan, parents receive a written report with the results.
