Pediatric Rheumatology

Persistent joint pain, morning stiffness, swelling, or limited mobility are not normal for a child and require specialized evaluation. At Diagnostic Center “Heart,” we offer consultations with a pediatric rheumatologist—a specialist who diagnoses and monitors joint, muscle, and connective tissue disorders in childhood.

Rheumatic conditions in children often differ from those in adults and require a delicate approach, continuous monitoring, and long-term care. Our team provides a calm and professional environment where parents receive clarity, and children receive focused and accurate care.

What is pediatric rheumatology?

Pediatric rheumatology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions affecting the joints, muscles, tendons, and connective tissue in children. These diseases can be difficult to recognize in the early stages, but timely intervention significantly improves the child’s quality of life and development.

At Diagnostic Center “Heart,” we provide precise evaluation, long-term follow-up, and an individualized approach for each child.

When should you consult a pediatric rheumatologist?

A consultation with a specialist is recommended in cases of:

  • Joint pain that recurs or persists for more than a few days
  • Morning stiffness or difficulty moving
  • Swelling, redness, or warmth in one or more joints
  • Recurrent pain in knees, ankles, wrists, or fingers
  • Limited mobility or refusal to play and move
  • Muscle pain without a clear cause
  • Rashes associated with joint complaints
  • Unexplained elevated inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR)
  • Fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, combined with joint symptoms
  • Family history of autoimmune or rheumatic diseases
What does the pediatric rheumatologist treat and monitor?

At our center, we diagnose and monitor:

  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Vasculitis (incl. Kawasaki disease, Henoch-Schönlein purpura)
  • Systemic scleroderma
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndrome
  • Reactive arthritis following infections
  • Autoimmune conditions affecting joints and skin
  • Arthralgia of unknown origin
What to expect during a pediatric rheumatology consultation?

The examination begins with a thorough discussion with the parents about the symptoms, their duration, past illnesses, and family history. It is followed by:

  • Physical examination with assessment of joint mobility
  • Evaluation of swelling, stiffness, pain, or restricted movement
  • Gait and muscle strength analysis
  • Tests may be ordered if needed:
    • Blood tests (inflammatory and autoimmune markers)
    • Imaging – ultrasound or X-ray of joints
    • Joint ultrasound to detect hidden inflammation

Based on the findings, an individual plan for monitoring, treatment, or referral to additional rehabilitation is developed.
